The long sleeve question

When does a long sleeve outperform a tee? We tested four pieces across a full range of conditions.

The long sleeve has an image problem. Most people file it under 'cold weather only' and reach for it three months a year. That's a mistake. Used well, a technical long sleeve is one of the most versatile pieces in a performance wardrobe — and it earns its place far outside winter.

Beyond the cold

Temperature is only one variable. Sun exposure, wind, and sweat management all change the calculation. A lightweight long sleeve on a bright summer run can keep you cooler than a tee by shading your skin and wicking across more surface area. The fabric weight is what matters, not the sleeve length.

Sun on long efforts

On anything over an hour in direct sun, covered skin fatigues less. A light, breathable long sleeve beats sunscreen that sweats off by the halfway point. Runners doing long weekend efforts and cyclists on open roads feel this most.

Wind on transition days

Spring and autumn are full of days that start cold and warm up fast. A thin long sleeve takes the edge off the first mile and can be pushed up or layered down as you go. It's the most adaptable single layer for unpredictable weather.

When the tee still wins

High heat with high humidity is the long sleeve's weakness — there's a point where any extra fabric is a liability no matter how light. On those days, the tee wins outright. Know the conditions and pick accordingly.

Our pick per scenario

Bright and dry: lightweight long sleeve. Cold start, warm finish: thin long sleeve you can push up. Hot and humid: tee, no contest. Keep one good long sleeve in rotation year-round and you'll reach for it more than you expect.

The long sleeve isn't a winter garment. It's a year-round tool most athletes underuse.
