Most nutrition advice for athletes is either wildly complicated or quietly disordered. The truth is calmer than both. For the vast majority of people who train, eating well around the work is a handful of habits done consistently — not a spreadsheet, not a supplement stack, not a rulebook you'll abandon by February.
Eat enough, first
The most common mistake in athletic nutrition isn't eating the wrong things — it's not eating enough to support the training. Underfueling shows up as flat sessions, poor recovery, and a body that holds onto stress. Before optimizing anything, make sure you're actually feeding the work you're doing.
Protein at every meal
If there's one habit worth building, it's a solid source of protein at each meal. It supports the repair that training demands and keeps you satisfied enough to stop snacking on autopilot. You don't need to weigh it. You need to notice whether it's there.
Carbs are not the enemy
Carbohydrate is the fuel your hard sessions run on. Cutting it indiscriminately is why so many people feel terrible when they start training seriously. Eat carbs around your training — before for energy, after for recovery — and stop treating them as something to apologize for.
Hydration is boring and it works
Most people are mildly dehydrated most of the time, and it quietly degrades everything. You don't need electrolyte packets for a forty-minute session. You do need to drink across the day rather than chugging when you remember. Pale and frequent is the target.
The 90 percent rule
Aim to eat well about ninety percent of the time and let the rest be food you simply enjoy. The athletes who sustain good nutrition for years aren't the strictest — they're the ones who built a flexible default and stopped treating one imperfect meal as a failure.
Good fueling is mostly unglamorous repetition. Get the basics right and you'll never need the complicated stuff.
